Gay marriage (again)...

Back in the early 1980s using the words "lesbian" or "gay" and "marriage" in the same sentence was the cue for an instant chorus of snorting, eye-rolling, spluttering and derisive cat-calls. Why would gay/lesbian people ape the oppressive structures of bourgeois-sexist-Christian-society?

Norman Geras has touched on the issue of gay marriage and GWB's proposed constitutional amendment, and links to a series of posts by Anne Cunningham (links through Normblog).

Despite being lukewarm on the whole idea of gay marriage (preferring domestic partnership arrangements, or de facto relationship rights), I do not oppose it, and the idea of amending the US constitution to specifically ban it horrifies me.

The laws that prohibit marriage between members of the same sex apply equally to everyone. No exceptions, no discrimination. It is not the fault of the government or the people that some people are bothered more by this than are others.

Jump off a roof and define what you do as flying and you still fall.

Idiots!!
