Before the England - Germany game this evening, as the cameras meandered over the crowd, they settled for a time on British PM Gordon Brown and his German counterpart Angela Merkel. Motson's patter went something like this:

One chancellor and one former chancellor ... Angela Merkel and Gordon Brown ... Gordon Brown has since been promoted from Chancellor.
